In this role, you will be responsible for assigned projects including engineering, design, coordination, client communications, and associated construction administration. Your responsibilities include performance of or oversight of engineering calculations, systems and equipment selection, mechanical and plumbing systems design and drafting, supervision of the mechanical and plumbing engineers and designers assigned to the project, project design budget management, and project schedule management.

 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Application of Knowledge of Building Systems (Conceptual Design)
    • Ensures understanding and compliance with the owner’s building program requirements and facility or corporate standards related to mechanical and plumbing systems design
    • Confirms and reviews applicable codes and standards such as but not limited to the International Building Code Council (Mechanical, Plumbing, Gas, Fire), ASHRAE Standards (90.1, 62, and 15), and NFPA
    • Given the scope of design services, the owner’s building program and facility standards, building code research, and relevant industry standards, establish and document the mechanical and plumbing systems basis of design and in doing so provide clarification, qualifications, and design assumptions regarding relevant design issues
    • Works with building/facility owners to ensure that the appropriate cost-effective systems/products are utilized in their facility
    • Works with the building owner and construction management team to validate construction costs and provide value engineering options as may be necessary
  • Design
    • Assist in the establishment of the building envelop thermal insulation values for the purpose of energy code compliance and cooling/heating load calculations
    • Performs and documents engineering calculations related to mechanical and plumbing systems for the purpose of selecting code-compliant systems and equipment
    • Performs systems and equipment selections
    • Performs layout and sizing of systems and equipment
    • Drafts or oversees the drafting of the mechanical and plumbing systems and in doing so establishes the appropriate level of drawing detail to ensure completeness and accuracy of design and construction cost
    • Schedules mechanical and plumbing equipment with the appropriate accessories and remarks
    • Develops the necessary control drawings (schematics, points list, and sequence of operation) to ensure adequate environmental temperature and humidity control or system and equipment performance
    • Ensures that there are complete and accurate specifications
  • Construction Support
    • Problem-solving for field oversights
    • Shop drawing/Submittal review
    • Field inspections and reports
    • Photograph review
    • RFI
  • Project Management (Design)
    • Supervise the staff assigned to the projects
    • Ensuring staff utilization
    • Overseeing the work performed by the assigned staff
    • Prepares design man-hour estimates for assigned projects
  • Profitability
    • Designs project within the provided design budget and negotiate additional design fees when the scope is expanded.
  • Planning/Scheduling
    • Provides direction for what is to be included in the design package issue (pricing documents, SD, DD, and CD).
    • Works with projects PDP/Project Engineer to ensure that the project schedule will be met and complete documents provided for each submission
  • Professional Development
    • Maintains required licensing CEU.
    • Proactively attempts to receive in-house/out-of-house training to maintain design skills
  • Leadership
    • Manages assigned staff on the projects
    • Provides mentoring of assigned staff

Education/Experience:

  • Accredited engineering degree
  • Typical minimum of eight years of experience after PE licensure

Specific Knowledge, Skills, License, Certifications:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Ability to mentor and train junior associates
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and teams, while maintaining design consistency amongst them.
  • Strong preference for a candidate with experience working on Temples for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has knowledge of their standards and guidelines.

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements:

 

While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, and arm, hand and finger dexterity, including the ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear.
